On July 10, 2009, participants filled a conference room at the CIDOB Foundation for EG Justice’s launching in Spain and for the first EG Policy Forum.

Remei Sipi, member of EG Justice’s Board of Advisors, delivered welcome remarks, which were followed by Executive Director Tutu Alicante’s succinct presentation of EG Justice’s mission, strategies, and objectives. Tutu Alicante introduced the EG Policy Forum as a roundtable for the exchange of ideas, analysis and discussion of contemporary issues affecting Equatorial Guinea.

Next, Arvind Ganesan, Director of Business and Human Rights at Human Rights Watch, gave an overview of the major findings of Human Rights Watch’s report, Well Oiled: Oil and Human Rights in Equatorial Guinea. One of the key findings, Mr. Ganesan asserted, is that the rapid growth of the oil economy in Equatorial Guinea has led to entrenched corruption and mismanagement of revenues by the Equatoguinean government.

Subsequently, Ignacio Saiz, interim Executive Director of the Center for Economic and Social Rights, discussed his organization’s fact sheet, Equatorial Guinea: Visualizing Rights, a rigorous statistical analysis of human development, census, and economic growth data that graphically depicts the social imbalances in Equatorial Guinea.

The event ended with questions from the audience and an intense discussion moderated by Equatoguinean human rights lawyer Jose Luis Nvumba.
