TITLE: A day in the life of a dictator demoted to ordinary citizen

Dear [NAME],

We’ve all experienced the outrage when we hear about dictators abusing their own people to stay in power and live lives of luxury. What if the tables were turned, and a dictator woke up to find himself living as an ordinary citizen in the repressive country he helped create?

That is the scenario that Equatoguinean artist Ramon Esono and his collaborators have created in their graphic novel Obi’s Nightmare” (La Pesadilla de Obi). The novel satirically portrays the hilarity and tragedy that would ensue if the real life president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro “Obi” Obiang, became an ordinary citizen and was forced to navigate the education, health, and prison systems that he created during his 33 years in power. Through this powerful narrative, they highlight the political absurdities in Equatorial Guinea and challenge the status quo of power and corruption maintained by the Obiang regime.
