The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) held an annual members’ meeting in Peru, the last week of February, 2016. Tutu Alicante, EG Justice Executive Director participated in the event, which brought civil society representatives from around the globe.

The premise of EITI to bring all actors together to have open and inclusive conversations was sadly undermined during the conference. Publish What You Pay (PWYP), OXFAM-America, and other civil society organizations boycotted the members’ meeting, after EITI chair Clare Short accepted a nomination to the CSO board outside of the established CSO process, and did not allow time for CSOs to enter the room to be a part of the vote. The lingering questions concern the EITI board’s abrogation of the rules and established process.
