On September 16, 2017, Nsé Ramón Esono Ebale, a renowned cartoonist and vocal critic of the current government in Equatorial Guinea, was unjustly detained on false charges of counterfeit and money laundering. In response, EG Justice and other organizations launched the #freenseramon campaign, urging the authorities in Equatorial Guinea to drop the charges and release Ramón without delay. As part of the campaign, artists and cartoonists worldwide submitted powerful cartoons and illustrations, calling for Ramón's freedom. See some of them below.
After six months of unjust imprisonment, the police in Equatorial Guinea finally admitted to fabricating the charges, leading to the withdrawal of accusations against Ramón. On March 7, 2018, he was rightfully released from prison.
